What Is a White Room (vs. a Cleanroom)?

If you need a controlled environment, the first question you should ask is whether your industry requires ISO cleanroom certification. If it does, then you need a cleanroom. If it doesn’t, a white room might be all you need.

But what exactly is a white room, and how is it different from a cleanroom?

In this article, we’ll explain what white rooms are, how they compare to cleanrooms, and how to figure out which one is right for your situation.

What Is a White Room?

A white room is a controlled environment designed to manage things like temperature, humidity, and airborne particles. These spaces use advanced filtration systems (HEPA/ULPA filters), controlled airflow, and specially selected materials and surfaces to create a clean and stable environment.

White rooms are typically used when products need some protection from dust and other environmental conditions, but where a full ISO cleanroom certification isn’t needed.

We’ve already alluded to some of the biggest differences, but if you had to sum it up briefly, it would come down to standards and certification.

Cleanrooms are required to meet ISO 14644 standards, which define very specific limits on the number and size of airborne particles allowed per cubic meter. These classifications range from ISO 1 (the most strict) to ISO 9 (the least strict).

Meeting these standards requires specialized filtration, airflow patterns, gowning procedures, environmental monitoring, and so on.

White rooms don’t have to meet those same ISO requirements. Granted, they often do meet some of them, as they are still used to protect products from dust and certain environmental conditions.

An easy way to think about it is that every cleanroom is technically a white room, but not every white room is a cleanroom.

The cleanroom just has to meet extra regulations.

When Do You Need a White Room vs. a Cleanroom?

It usually comes down to what your industry requires.

If you’re manufacturing pharmaceuticals, medical devices, or semiconductors, or if your industry requires ISO 14644 compliance, you almost certainly need a cleanroom.

A white room, on the other hand, is usually enough for things like electronics assembly, aerospace part handling, quality control and inspection, or general packaging, especially where you need a clean environment but don’t need full ISO certification.

If you’re still not sure which one applies to you, the deciding factor is almost always whether your industry has a specific ISO classification you’re required to meet.

If it does, go with a cleanroom. If it doesn’t, a white room will likely do the job, and cost less to build.

Building a White Room With Modular Construction

Whether you need a white room or a full cleanroom, modular construction is one of the best ways to build. Here’s why:

Fast Installation

Modular white rooms are built from prefabricated wall panels that are manufactured offsite and assembled at your location. This means your space can be up and running in weeks rather than months.

Customizable

Modular systems are flexible. You can start with a basic white room and upgrade it later with better filtration, gowning areas, or airlocks if you ever need to meet full cleanroom standards.

Expandable & Relocatable

Similarly, if your needs change, a modular white room can be expanded, reconfigured, or even moved to a different location. This is a huge advantage over traditional stick-built construction, which is permanent and far more expensive to change.

Fewer Disruptions

Because most of the construction happens offsite, the installation process is quick and clean. What’s more, your operations don’t have to shut down while the white room goes up.

The Bottom Line

A white room gives you a controlled, clean environment without the cost and complexity of a full ISO-certified cleanroom. If your industry doesn’t require formal certification, it’s likely the smarter choice.
